In 2025, Catholic and Orthodox Easter are celebrated on April 20. Easter dates for Catholics and Orthodox are generally different due to different calendars. Eastern Christians (Orthodox) use the Julian calendar, which means that their public holidays are calculated according to the old style. Western Christians (Catholics) follow the Gregorian calendar (new style). In most cases, Catholic Easter is celebrated earlier, but different branches of Christianity sometimes celebrate on the same day. The last time this happened was in 2017, when Christ’s luminous Resurrection was celebrated on April 16.

Calculating the exact date of Christ’s Luminous Resurrection is highly complex and depends on the solar and lunar calendar. In ancient times, the exact date was determined by the Bishop of Alexandria. At the first ecumenical council, held in the city of Nicaea in 325, it was decided that Easter fell on the first Sunday after the first full moon of spring… .In modern times, Christ’s resurrection is still celebrated between April 4 and May 8 (March 21 and April 25 in the olden days). As Christ’s luminous resurrection is one of Christianity’s principal and most revered events, all other “turning” events depend on it. For example, Lent – preparation for Easter – begins seven weeks before the Resurrection.
